A "zeta-beam" transports an Earth archaeologist to Rann, close to Alpha Centauri, where he meets Sardath and Alanna. The Earth is attacked by extraterrestrial invaders known as The Eternals, while Adam and Alanna travel to Samakand, a city reminiscent of Brigadoon, in search of a life-metal known as "vitatron." After deceiving the aliens into believing they are stuck in Samakand, Adam disappears and returns to Earth to wait for the next zeta-beam.
